When that happens to me I always tell to RTFM first then come and talk to me
if they still don't understand. Do it enough times and they will soon learn
to RTFM.
My problem is not so much programmers not documenting their work but
inadequate documentation. I often see comments like "Dennis asked me to do
this"
It also pays to have one or more good documenters in your team. That way
you can produce good quality user and reference documentation. So much for
unproductive work, huh?

The worst part is when you have taken the time for documentation, and then
people are too lazy to read it and go staight to you and ask, RTFM!!!!
Grrrr

I have, in the past, been told not to waste time on unproductive tasks
such
as this...
Glad I don't work at those places any more...
It seems inversely proportional - The amount of documentation vs The
amount
of talking about documentation and the need for it!

Well :-)
If you were a good programmer then these things would be documented.
If I were employing you and you were considering leaving then I would
hope for as much notice as possible.
As an employee, I only ever felt this loyalty once. My boss wept when
I told him I was leaving and started promising whatever I wanted. I
still had to leave and I found my replacement before I left.
The replacement was very good but the boss did not get along with him.
:-(

I've been considering changing jobs for some time now - mostly to keep
my sanity. However there is so much stuff that I am responsible for
that no one else knows about that the company would have some
difficulties if I left and I would feel bad if this was the case. I
guess this is probably a common problem when working for a small company
.
Does anyone else feel stuck in a job through some sort of misplaced
loyalty?
