I think firebird is excellent... but then it depends on what you want it to do.

if you are a 2-tier developer who feels like writing triggers and stored procedures and having business logic in the database, then it is not as nice to intereact with as MS-SQL or oracle. If you are interested in a reasonable quick reliable self-maintaining database to
keep licensing costs low to the end-user then it is excellent.

I don't use triggers or stored procedures so I probably haven't encountered the issues that others might have. All my business logic is stored in an application middle tier and if it cant be done with SELECT/INSERT/UPDATE then i don't do it.

on my laptop with its 4200rpm HDD, 2.8P4 I can insert over 100,000 records per minute, which is faster than anything my software ever requires. I haven't ever had a problem with it. I don't ever have active cursors etc, as was raised awhile ago with Rohits transaction issues, so it probably depends on your style of development.

Never really tried MySQL to compare with, but I wouldn't bother because it does what I need well. I think Nevens earlier comment of best of breed and interbase not being there is overly opinionated (but then it was an opinion), as it really depends on how you use it. Interbase/Firebird has been around for a long time, and will be around a while longer I am sure. It has a light footprint which is nice. At the end of the day, if you are moving from DBISAM ... I don't think there is anything worse than DBISAM....

my 2c.

I am considering moving one of my projects from dbisam to firebird. Any
war stories? Anything I should be aware of?
