Hi

Im no expert but I believe the connections thing is a non issue in the current FB release. 30Gb is a non issue is far as I know, I have read of much larger DBs. The Sweep thing is still around but most people never experiance it as a major problem. I believe this has probably been improved since IB 5. I think in FB 2 this is supposed to be further improved.

Very useful information. Anyone know for sure if the issues that Kurt describes are addressed in the latest FB?

I guess that answer would be.... When the DB requires a Cluster to
handle the number of transactions / Connections required. FB doesn't
do Clusters, I guess Oracle does.

Basically.

FWIW, in about '99 the place I was at started
running into trouble after ~50 connections on
IB 5.
Would've been early days of 5 though, and
Firebird, IB 6+ and all the OS and network
stuff would've improved a lot since then.

That database was >30GB (in the days
that your home box would have a 1-8GB drive :)

And I'm pretty sure with IB (definitely for Firefox) you could multiplex connections if you wanted, which some db Vendors'll charge you for.

The other thing - elsewhere - we used to run
into was hitting a sweep and clean in IB, where if you touch a large number of records,
the query will be slowed down multiple times
for the database to do its housekeeping, which
could be painful.

Cheers, Kurt.
