Not sure what the issue is, I VNC many clients machines and those that
run MS antispyware seem to have large pauses when starting applications
(at least the applications that I want to run).

Are you referring to "first run" (in which case, big deal -
everything gets run the first time -- ONCE).
Or every time? In which case, I think you may have it wrong. Or very
very slow machines...
