Are you using TopGrid to actually store the data with Store=True, and
using Cell access?
I can probably whip up a sample. But... You are much better off having
store = false and
making it a virtual grid, This is faster and more powerful. and easy to
make subclasses of
the grid to bind into classlists etc.

displayed.
If you are talking about why they are typing, then Topgrid supports
extensive
masking features, and custom edit controls. i believe there is a password
mask,
drop it on your form etc and link the mask object to the grid
