...just from my experiences with large DBs:

Yes.

Especially, yes.

...and database complexity. At times, an application server can de-
normalise and do other things with its caching that the back-end
doesn't do, so you win there as well.

If middleware was not useful for some things, there'd be no reason
whatever to use it. Nearly <g>.
