Ok, here's an alternative version. I think I prefer this one to my first
attempt. It is a little longer and a little less efficient, but it is
also more straightforward and easier to understand.
It produces the exact same results as my previous version (at least for
the set of test cases I used). But it should be trivial to modify its
behaviour for the two cases I was uncertain how to deal with correctly.
