Yes. I did update it. I compiled it on a few different machines some
with had libsmf pre-installed and some didn't. All were successful.

this seems to indicate that the file:
denemo-0.9.2/libsmf/Makefile.in
is missing for some reason.
I am testing with:
"denemo-0.9.2.tar.gz 29-Sep-2011 09:56 12M"
from: http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/denemo/
The file "denemo-0.9.2/libsmf/Makefile.in" exits and the ./configure
with and without "--with-included-smf" seems to work well:

config.status: creating libsmf/Makefile
...
