I have made progress with this now - I installed Rosegarden and imported the midi there, then exported the lilypond and finally imported that into Denemo. Denemo BTW is not handling rests without explicit durations nor dotted notes correctly :( I shall post up the result of this pilgrimage shortly. I am still trying to track down the authors responsible...
