Better for which sort of user? The default key shortcuts work for a MIDI controller and numeric keypad set up. The bottom line is that it has been some years now since I entered music entirely from a pc-keyboard so I can't really advise. For use with a MIDI controller the current shortcuts mean that you can set the prevailing duration with a number key and then enter the pitch or pitches of that duration on the MIDI controller. The beauty of it is that you are not limited to a single duration, you can enter as many as you like and then play in the pitches. No further keypresses are needed. The shortcuts Ctrl-0, Ctrl-1, ... mean that you can enter the slurs for the same work (if you count Ctrl-0 as the same work as 0, which is not quite the case). I suspect the only solution to the different users is different shortcut sets, but how to make it really easy for folks to choose I don't know. > This would reduce keypresses > if their is a change in rhythm with an interval skip that is larger than > a third. > Maybe I will just do that on my own keyset. Well, I think there should be a sensible way to enter/edit music for those that don't have a MIDI controller attached. > I also have added the > navigation keys to the vim style that denemo use to have. I think that shortcut is wrong (there was a change a couple of years ago which meant that many shorcuts had to be re-instated, giving new names). On my machine the shortcut is Ctrl-Shft-equal, but probably you would set just Ctrl-equal if you wanted it. Most people have a wheel mouse, so Control with the wheel is much easier (?) - that is a built in. I would simply drop the shortcut from the standard set. The more shortcuts there are the more likely you are to cause something un-intended by mis-typing, so I would prefer only to have the set of shortcuts that I actually remember, which is just a few. There are quite a few which Nils put in which just represent a hazard to me as I type, because I don't remember them and on the rare occasions when I need the command I go and fetch it from the menu. (One example of this that comes to mind is the Staff properties command, which has a shortcut; since I almost always use the same instrumental line ups I rarely need it).
