Should I be calling the tarball denemo-0.9.6rc1.tar.gz?

yes there will be at least the final candidate once the translations are
in. The ~ convention Josue mentions seems a good idea. IIRC from last
time, you are able to upload the identical file with the correct name
and signature to ftp.gnu.org once we have given it a clean bill of
health?

Yes. I can do that. I think I have to resign it if I change the filename though. Thats not a big deal.

If you do this, please add a tilde "~": denemo-0.9.6~rc1.tar.gz,
because in debian tools (and others) "a tilde sorts before anything,
even the end of a part".

"For example, 1.0~beta1~svn1245 sorts earlier than 1.0~beta1, which
  sorts earlier than 1.0."

$ dpkg --compare-versions 0.9.6 gt 0.9.6rc1 && echo true || echo false
false

$ dpkg --compare-versions 0.9.6 gt 0.9.6~rc1 && echo true || echo false
true

This way I could package a release candidate and upload it to Debian,
to try to get a wider audience to test it.
