This message *** missing separator. Stop could be to do with the version of the make program I think. In the old days make was *very* fussy about Tabs and spaces, it would accept one and not the other. Having said that, looking at line 623 in portmidi/pm_linux/Makefile I see nothing suspect ... if you still have the problem perhaps you could email your config.log file.
