Two thoughts: 1) Test the binary executable (you don't need root permissions to do this, it is all self-contained)
2) use Edit->Change Preferences->Audio/MIDI then alter the audio output device. the first option tests if it is the way it is built (versions of things, configure flags) the second that portaudio is trying to open the wrong device for output.
