Well, by chance I have now tested the zip file on two XP machines. On
one I ran it straight from the USB memory stick, and everything worked
without a hitch.
On the other I copied the extracted files and ran it from the hard disk.
There was a big surprise - *all* the text was in the ancient version of
denemo.ttf, which had the note symbols in alphabetical positions. It
turned out that this machine had last been used for Denemo many years
ago and the old font was still there. I deleted it and then everything
worked just fine (including LilyPond).
So - one insight now is that despite Denemo.bat running the font install
program it does not supersede any installed font of the same name.
