Well, yes it is more "proper" since the pitch is an octave lower than
treble clef. But I've no doubt some users will want a treble clef
sounding and octave lower but not saying so, so we could do with both.

Needing even more sorting out would be transposing instruments - some
people would want to enter the music at actual pitch, others would want
to enter at the transposed pitch... I recall that LilyPond has special
midi-transpose syntax in this connection.
