I looked through the manual and can find no obvious reference to lines
starting with a "\" escape character.
Many references to \bold etc which don't seem to need a new line.
The Skip Syllables command doesn't mention it either - else I might have
noticed.

That sounds right. It starts with \ doesn't it? Then it has to end with
a new line. I think that's documented.
