Well, the Gtk "theme" shipped with that Gtk version defeated that
attempt, (along with GtkFrames that don't have a visible frame it would
seem they shipped a GtkSeparator that didn't visibly separate anything -
in this case the naturals of the virtual keyboard). I have this
overridden now, so tomorrow should be good. Another 10 days for any
further translations should then be ok.
