That sums it up nicely, yes.

However, I think I can put an end to this mystery now.

Let me first say this: I should not be reading FAQs at 7:30 in the morning 
before my first cup of coffee...

The answer to the mystery is that the allowed-hosts file was in the wrong 
location! My bad.

I put it in /usr/share/denyhosts, while it should have been 
in /usr/share/denyhosts/data, which is the configured work-dir 
in /etc/denyhosts.conf.

I've just altered my config, stopped the daemon, removed the host 
from /etc/hosts.deny and restarted the daemon. We'll see how it goes now, but 
I expect it to be solved.

So again, my bad! Apologies for the noise on the list!
