Just wanted to add that performance is the secondary issue for the logs, recoverability is the first. Thus "rws" may have been selected because it does write the metadata whereas "rwd" does not. This is of course complicated by lack of definition of metadata, thus the choice of "rws" may be the safer of the two. Cloudscape has always been written against the Java specs, not making any assumptions on how various Java implementations implement the spec. I would hope Derby would follow this idea.
