OK, so Andrew created a new build.xml file for ant
that we can use for building docs from the DITA
source. His ant file is more specific to our tasks,
and is much simpler to use. He checked it in to svn
with the DITA files, and he also added the fop jar
files. So now all you need to do to build is grab the
DITA trunk directory using svn, and then install the
DITA toolkit within the trunk! If you set your
classpath correctly to include Ant and Fop, everything
should work! There is no need for saxon, since Ant
includes Xalan.
So to make things easy, I went ahead and modified the
site to remove the section on DITA from the Manuals
page. I then created a new file called dita.xml that
provides instructions for creating output in PDF and
HTML from the DITA. I am including them with this
note, the changes affect site.xml, manuals/index.xml,
and adds manual/dita.xml.
Jean, if no one has any objections, if you put these
files up it should make things VERY simple.

Currently each Derby manual is sourced in an XML implementation called the Darwin Information Typing Architecture, or DITA. The original HTML source for the Derby documenation was converted to DITA to create an easy solution for requirements such as creating PDF outputs or single HTML files for each manual (See the
<a href="http://mail-archives.eu.apache.org/mod_mbox/db-derby-dev/200410.mbox/[EMAIL PROTECTED]">Derby
documentation in PDF format</a> thread).
</p>
<p>This page lists the software required to convert the DITA-sourced documentation into HTML or PDF, and describes how to convert the DITA source to the desired outputs. These instructions currently describe how to use an <code>ant</code> build file with the DITA Toolkit to create output.</p>
<section>
<title>Setting up your environment</title>
<p>
Requirements:</p>
<ul>
<li><p>The <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/dita-ot/";>DITA Toolkit</a> Version 1.0 from SourceForge. Use ONLY this version.</p></li>
<li><p>Derby's DITA source files, Apache FOP, and the <code>build.xml</code> file used with ant to build the output. These can ALL be extracted at once using svn: </p><source>svn checkout http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/derby/docs/trunk/</source></li>
<li><p><a href="http://ant.apache.org/";>Apache Ant Version 1.6.2</a></p></li>
<li>Any JDK 1.4.2. Java's reference implementation is at <a href="http://java.sun.com/j2se/";>http://java.sun.com/j2se/</a>.</li>
</ul>
<p>To set up your environment for creating output from DITA-source:
</p>
<ol><li>Install the JDK 1.4.2 implementation.</li>
<li><p>Extract the DITA source files, Apache FOP, and the <code>build.xml</code> file from svn using the command described above. We will call the extraction home directory <code>%DOC_ROOT%</code>. For example, after extracting, the <em>Getting Started with Derby</em> DITA files would be located in <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/src/getstart/</code>.
</p></li>
<li><p>Extract the DITA Toolkit to the <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/</code> directory. After extraction, the DITA Toolkit files should be located in <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/DITA-OT1.0/</code>.</p></li>
<li><p>Install Apache Ant, and make sure to follow the <a href="http://ant.apache.org/manual/index.html";>instructions</a> for setting your environment variables.</p></li>
<li><p>For PDF output: Make sure to include the <code>fop.jar</code>, <code>avalon-framework-cvs-20020806.jar</code>, and <code>batik.jar</code> files located in <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/lib/</code> in your <code>CLASSPATH</code> environment variable.</p></li>
</ol>

<section>
<title>Creating output</title>
<p>To create output from the DITA source files:</p>
<ol>
<li>From a command line, navigate to <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/</code>.</li>
<li>Enter the desired <code>ant</code> command on the command line using the following syntax:
<source>ant <output_type>.<manual_id></source>The <code><output_type></code> is the format of the output you wish to create, either HTML or PDF. The <code><manual_id></code> is the id of the manual you wish to output. The id can be found as the name of the directory containing that manual's DITA source files in <code>%DOC_ROOT%/trunk/src/</code>. For example, to create PDF output for the <em>Getting Started with Derby</em> guide, enter the following command:<source>ant pdf.getstart</source> To create PDF or HTML output for ALL SIX manuals at once, simply enter the output type with no manual:<source>ant pdf</source>or<source>ant html</source></li>
</ol>
<p>The output files will be built by the ant file and placed in the <code>%DOC_ROOT%/out/</code> directory. If any of the software is not set up and configured correctly, the build will fail.</p> <p>The following table lists the manual id's for each Derby manual:</p>

<section><title>Modifying the output format</title>
<p>You may wish to modify the output created by the DITA Toolkit to fix organization, formatting, links, indexing, etc. To do this, you will have to modify the xsl files distributed with the DITA Toolkit. The instructions for which files to modify and how are included within the Toolkit documentation. To modify the PDF output, it is recommended that you make changes only to the <code>dita2fo_shell.xsl</code> file.</p>
<p>
You are invited to submit your modified xsl files to <code>derby-dev</code>. If you wish to use a modified xsl file, just replace the version of the file in the toolkit with the new one. Jeff Levitt submitted an xsl file for improving the PDF output <a href="http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/db-derby-dev/200503.mbox/[EMAIL PROTECTED]">here</a>.
