I presume it could be a problem if the object is serialized to disk with
pre-10.8 Derby, and then attempted read after an upgrade. Also, if two
different versions of Derby were exchanging this object over the wire it would
fail if the two parties are <= 10.7 and > 10.7 respectively. At least that is
my current understanding.
