Hi Mike,

I have checked in derby-6554-02-ae-selfDeadlock_sps_compress.diff, the patch 
you prefer. I have also logged new, follow-on issues:

o DERBY-6572 - This is item 2 in your previous comment.

o DERBY-6573 - This is item 3 in your previous comment.

Hopefully, this is enough to get you going on item 2. Note that besides 
sequence/identity, the language layer uses nested sub transactions during 
trigger compilation (technically, during the compilation of any stored prepared 
statement).
