If you haven't already, you may want to look at "Maintaining database
integrity" and related topics in the Derby Admin Guide at
http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/10.11/adminguide/index.html. This provides a
bit of the rationale on disabling the write cache as well as other information
on avoiding database corruption.
