Thanks, Knut Anders, that makes a lot of sense.

It suggests that the solution might be as simple as the
attached 'nullGuard.diff'.

Unfortunately, I'm still not able to reproduce the problem
in my environment. I'll keep trying, but if anyone else
is able to reproduce the problem, and can test that
diff, that would be very helpful.
