Rick Hillegas commented on DERBY-6856:
--------------------------------------
I saw two errors when I ran the tests on JDK 8, but I see those two errors even
without the patch. They are network-related tests and may be sensitive to
something in the remote environment where I am working. I will now build and
run on JDK 9. Here are the errors:
{noformat}
There were 2 failures:
1)
testPingWithWrongHost(org.apache.derbyTesting.functionTests.tests.derbynet.NetworkServerControlClientCommandTest)junit.framework.AssertionFailedError:
Could not find expectedString:Unable to find host in output:<STDOUT>Sun May 29
10:38:52 PDT 2016 : Could not connect to Derby Network Server on host
nothere.invalid, port 1527: Operation timed out
<END STDOUT>

> Derby can't be built with JDK 9. Java 9 introduces new JDBC classes like
> java.sql.ShardingKey and methods which refer to these new classes.
> In addition, project Jigsaw has created a new way to name classes (see
> http://openjdk.java.net/jeps/220). This breaks the PropertySetter build tool
> which we use so that old JVMs can compile Derby and so that Derby can be
> compiled to run on old JVMs.
> It is likely that we will need to leave this issue open throughout the
> development cycle of Java 9.
