Thanks for that explanation of the problem you are trying to solve. I suspect
that a millisecond granularity is adequate for the timestamps in your weather
data. You can represent those with a BIGINT in the database and you can handle
the parsing and formatting of those BIGINT timestamps either in your
application or in user-defined functions which run in your SQL statements. The
java.sql.Timestamp class is just a thin wrapper around a java long (Derby
BIGINT) and represents the number of milliseconds since the Unix epoch--so I
think there are many applications which handle the problem this way. Your
BIGINT would represent the number of UTC milliseconds since the Unix epoch. If
this answer is bewildering, please ask more questions.
