Hehe, a typo yes. I am currently learning Java database techniques, studying Hibernate at the moment. Coding Derby would be a very interesting hobby indeed. I would try to do backward index scan first, and all optimizations that can benefit from it (order by desc, max()).

(There are a lot of Thunderbird bugs that prevent proper Digest usage).

Since you mentioned you had other database development experience in the past, I think, your learning curve (I am assuming it was a typo in your message... when you said 'curse' :-) ) should not be steep. Given compact code base of Derby and generally very good design, it is not very difficult to get involved...
