Resolving to a java method with primitive type long is correct for Java 
functions.

You can resolve to a type of Long by using the method signature in the external 
name clause of create function, e.g.

CREATE FUNCTION app.bigintToHexString(hexString bigint)
RETURNS VARCHAR(16)
PARAMETER STYLE JAVA NO SQL
LANGUAGE JAVA
EXTERNAL NAME 'derbyJavaUtils.bigintToHexString(java.lang.Long)' 

I think those 'Corresponding compile-time Java type' sections in each datatype 
are a relic from when Cloudscape supported Java types directly in the SQL 
language. They should probably be removed.
