I'll file a separate issue for removing all the existing sessions after a restart. From Knut's comments, this is only an optimization issue. As derby-1326-skipThreads.diff resolves this hang, we can re-enable the shutdown in the test jdbcapi/checkDataSource.java. This was commented out as it caused the test to hang intermittently.
