Thanks Dan, I don't know why my search through archives didn't return that, but that's the bug I was looking for.
Thanks also Jean and Rick...And indeed, running with extra memory seems to get me past the hurdle. I did notice that ant junit-all seems to run the suites in a different sequence, that may be why that works - but on the faster machine I just run with jars and I don't have ant installed on it (nor do I want to set it up right now).
