I think you're correct in referring to "the JVM in which it runs" or "the JVM
in which the database is created." For the first occurrence you might want to
say "Java Virtual Machine (JVM)" for clarity. But when you mention
documentation it is probably best to say "Java API documentation".
The API doc for java.lang.character points to the Unicode site
(www.unicode.org) for details without giving an indication of exactly which
version is supported. (See, for instance,
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/index.html.)
