Uploading a patch, DERBY-3137 for initial review. Please see uploaded
patch description (*.txt) for details as well as functional
specification attached to DERBY-2207.
The patch is a bit on the big side, so feel free to post partial
reviews.
I have tried to stick to established patterns in the code, but I will
likely have overlooked or misunderstood things since I haven't
ventured too much into these areas before, so don't assume I'm right
;)
