The simpler repro doesn't have the exact same stack trace as the reported 
error. The reported error happens during the bind phase, whereas the simpler 
repro fails during byte code generation. The simpler repro can also be made 
into failing during bind by rewriting it to:

ij> create table t(x int);
0 rows inserted/updated/deleted
ij> select sum(x) from t group by x union values 1;
ERROR XJ001: Java exception: '1 >= 1: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException'.
