For what it's worth, I checked the bin.tar.gz distributions for 10.3.3.0 and 10.5.1.1 and in both (although for 10.3.3.0 only a handful) there were long file/path names, so I think it's enough to indicate we should use gnu for all tarballs on the website...
I think I only ever checked the tarballs on linux on solaris, but gnu tar is first on the path in my setup there, and the zip files on windows, thus have not noticed this. Myrna
