I would be ok if someone backported this to 10.8.  As I understand it the 
current  performance is at a level for some applications which I would
consider making the feature unusable without the fix.  It may increase gaps, 
but we should continue to document that the feature in no way
guarantees no gaps.  Any application relying on no gaps is a bug waiting to 
happen whether we backport this change or not.  In general I don't
like seeing improvements backported, but performance issues are sometimes ok 
with me when they cause big enough problems.

For me I lean toward the behavior change backport being ok for 10.8 as I would 
guess there are not a lot of applications yet out there on this 
release.  The upcoming release will be available to all users as a supported 
apache release.  I don't think I would backport it farther than
10.8.
