CTAS fails and returns erroneous error

Environment: Windows XP, Netbeans 6.9.1, Was experiencing error with
Derby 10.3.2.1 so upgraded to 10.8.2.2 ( latest ) and getting same error. (
Given description seems unlikely to be netbeans issue )

create table temp as
select
c.cid copyId,
m.cid memberId,
p.cid productId
from
tcopy c,
tmember m,
tproduct p
where
m.cid = c.cmemberid
and
p.cid = c.cproductid ;
gives ;
Error code -1, SQL state 42X01: Syntax error: Encountered "<EOF>" at line 13,
column 20.
running the select statement alone is fine ;
select
c.cid copyId,
m.cid memberId,
p.cid productId
from
tcopy c,
tmember m,
tproduct p
where
m.cid = c.cmemberid
and
p.cid = c.cproductid ;
returns the data with no errors
