Actually, it is impossible to turn off SQL authorization once it has been 
turned on, regardless of which authentication scheme is being used -- according 
to http://db.apache.org/derby/docs/dev/devguide/cdevcsecure866060.html. 

Thanks for the clarification on what works and what doesn't. You had implied, I 
think, that the defaultConnectionMode (at least) is old and should not be used 
with SQL authorization -- but that, I guess, is just a usage recommendation.
