I agree that a fix that's local to SlaveDatabase is cleaner.
To reduce the amount of state we need to maintain in the class, we could
perhaps pass sdbThread as an argument to verifySuccessfulBoot(), and call
isAlive() on it instead of checking the new volatile flag.
