The Unix equivalent seems to be Java Service daemon (jsvc) http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/daemon/jsvc.html But for Derby to become an smf service, more is needed, cf. http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/selfheal/sdev_intro.html Dag
