I has done some performance analysisis for the HSQL and Derby. 
Derby is certainly better in terms of DB sizing, throughput and response time. 
One big problem with HSQL is that the memory keeps shooting up and runs out of 
memory over time, on the other hand CPU requirements for the HSQL in my 
application environment were more stable.
