I'm not sure if I would see Lapo as a willing icon designer -- he's involved in other projects, most notably Gnome, and his time and energy is limited (at least that's the way I see it). Both Gnome and Tango discourage against localizing icons. Rather, to represent text, they use the "A" glyph, which is the first letter in the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic alphabets.
