One of my tasks this week was to look through the images at OpenClipart.org
and pick some to include in LibreOffice's gallery. This task led me to
revisit the Gallery after a long time, and I was surprised at just how
uncomfortable it was to use. Based on my experience, I would like to offer
a few suggestions for improvement.
a) On my netbook, the gallery takes up about half the document area by
default, and there's not enough space for either the gallery or the
document. I would suggest to open the gallery docked to the side by default.
b) Double-clicking an item should insert it, not open a preview. (At least
that seems to be a standard when inserting images into a document.)
c) Since we want all commands to be discoverable (ux-discovery), how about
having a toolbar below the object list that would hold all the items that
are now only available through right-click. ("Insert >" and "Preview").
d) To compensate for the space lost with such a toolbar, we could remove
the top toolbar, move the icons for different views to the new toolbar, and
show the file name in the object list if we deem it necessary to show the
file name at all.
