I took a look at the bug report and here are my thoughts.
It is never a good way to approach people who are passionate about
something by saying whatever they do is "dull".
I'll put it bluntly: "toolbars are outdated, let's copy MS Office's
ribbon" doesn't cut it. If we are going to use something which looks
like ribbon, this will be for usability reasons.
To improve usability on now common widescreen screens using vertical
space instead of horizontal would be a good idea. Kind of "Ribbon on the
sidebar" is what Dreamweaver, next version of Apache OpenOffice and many
other programs already do use. So does LibO Impress.
As for the icons, take a look at this whiteboard which is in the
polishing phase right now and chime in:
