+ On Windows, they are enabled by default -- because it is common
  there.

+ On Mac they are not -- I think it is impossible to get icons into the
  menus there.

On our side, there differing opinions on this issue. I personally like
clean menus and the potential it brings for getting rid of rarely-used
icons.
Iirc, Mirek was very much in favour of icons in all menus.
