Just to put my 2 cents worth in this. . .
I created a logo for a local organization, several years ago. It looked
good as a logo on a shirt, etc., but it was long and narrow - like LO logo.
When we decided to buy new shirts, sweats, etc., we decided to make a
more "boxy" type of logo that would make it larger since it was almost
as tall as wide/long. It shows up much better at a distance.
Yes, I like the current LO logo, but yes it looks small on marketing
material/swag like shirts, sweats, hats, etc..
Most logos I have seen, lately, seem to be leaning towards both hight
and width being nearly the same measurement.
I really think it would be nice to have a "second" logo that has a more
"square" shape or at least not as "short" for the height. It may fit a
lot more marketing situations better than the current logo.

You could use just the document symbol. :/
Currently there are no alternative lockups for the LibreOffice logo.
Would be good to have such a thing...
However, the one obvious alternative lockup where the document symbol
would be centred atop the word "LibreOffice" (similar to the alternate
lockup on [1]) would not have fared better in your situation.
