This is part of the material design <http://www.google.com/design/spec/material-design/introduction.html> initiative (iconography section <http://www.google.com/design/spec/style/icons.html#icons-system-icons>), which they are adopting across all different devices (not only for Google products, but encouraging their use on apps targeting Android).
Interesting. It seems that Google has no interest in looking radically different from other websites, as someone felt necessary for Wikimedia projects vs. the rest of MediaWikis.
