Maybe a custom icon that looked like an item on a list... and then when it was dropped, the collection would light up a similar icon for a moment.

Maybe not the "copy" cursor used in Windows (arrow with a small "+" in the lower-right corner), because then it will look like the item is being duplicated in multiple collections.
