You should get Reid involve here. He is the toolbar specialist now.
Also, FWIW, I'd prefer an unobtrusive animated spin icon in the status
bar or toolbar (along with a small cancel icon) rather than modifying
the main toolbar buttons.

Maybe while the sync is happening the sync-all button should change
to a cancel button (stop sign?) with text below saying "syncing..."
or something to that effect.
