I think it is partly a relic, but partly the fastest way to achieve
something.

Also, people are very used to sort, and taking it away would increase
the learning curve needed when switching to Chandler. I would vote to
keep it in.

That seems too much work, and wouldn't work that well for my use case: I
find I often realize I need to find an email someone sent to me in the
past, but I am not exactly sure when they send it, nor do I remember
what the subject was. So I typically type in the person's name in the
Thunderbird quick (search) filter, and then (because I keep the emails
in chronological order) quickly scroll to roughly the time when I think
the email was sent and start scrolling, hoping the email summary (once I
see it) will trigger that memory.

Although I generally detest sections by date (today, yesterday, last
week, ...) they can be nice if I know the email was sent yesterday. But
in my case I can rarely pinpoint it that accurately in time when I need
to find a past email.

I think sections can reduce the need to sort, for example creating
dynamic sections based on person would work fine for me.
