We've been struggling with the readability of collection names when:
1. The collection is empty and therefore grey, rather than black.
2. The collection is not only selected, but has focus. This is
because the more saturated highlight color does not contrast enough
with the collection name text to be readable.
John has pointed out that the grey text is confusing because it
misleads the user into thinking the collection is somehow disabled.
This is especially true because we haven't been able to implement the
text we originally planned to have in the summary pane that would
have explain to the user why the collection was grey:
Additionally, 'greyed out' empty collection design grew out of
concern that users would have a hard time understanding the faceted
sidebar. The hope was that greying out empty collections as users
clicked across the different App areas would help them understand the
orthogonal relationship between App areas and Collections.
However, we haven't gotten complaints on the list re: faceted
sidebar. But we have received feedback that the greyed out collection
names is confusing.
In light of all of these issues, challenges and feedback, I propose
that we get rid of the special visual treatment for empty collections.
